Battery Energy Storage

Battery energy storage systems: energy shifting, backup power, peak shaving and solar smoothing, managed by BMS and EMS.

Battery cells charging for energy storage

Scope

Battery storage stores generated energy for later use: energy shifting, backup power, peak shaving, load shifting, frequency and voltage support, solar smoothing and renewable-energy integration.

Sizing distinguishes power (kW) from energy (kWh): a 100 kW / 400 kWh BESS can theoretically deliver 100 kW for approximately 4 hours under simplified conditions.

Technology

Lithium-ion chemistries including LFP and NMC, with LFP particularly important for stationary storage because of its safety characteristics and cycle life.

A battery management system monitors cell voltage, current, temperature, state of charge and state of health, providing cell balancing and protection. An energy management system dispatches solar, battery, grid, generator and loads.

Solar-Plus-Storage

Properly configured solar-plus-storage systems can support resilience, and grid-forming inverters can enable a sufficiently large system to restart or establish a local grid after disruptions.
