Scope

A mini-grid is an electricity supply system with its own generation capacity supplying more than one customer within a defined area, operating independently or in coordination with an existing distribution network.

Under the 2026 NERC framework, isolated mini-grids are classified up to 5 MW per site and interconnected mini-grids up to 10 MW per site, with provisions for grid arrival, permits, customer protection, tariffs and interconnection.

System Architecture

Solar PV array, DC combiner, solar inverter, AC bus, battery energy storage with a bidirectional inverter, control system, and a distribution network serving homes and businesses.

Hybrid mini-grids can add diesel generators, the grid, wind or small hydro where a single source cannot reliably satisfy demand.

Development Process

Site identification, energy and load assessment, solar resource assessment, technical design, economic analysis, regulatory process, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning, operations and monitoring.

Productive-use energy turns connections into economic activity: irrigation, milling, refrigeration, cold storage, welding and small manufacturing.
